Memory verse: “And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. Revelation 19:10
We have learned that the gift of prophecy was given to the writers of the old and New Testament. The word of God was written to reveal God’s will for man. What about modern “Prophets”? Remember Mary Baker Eddy was a prophetess and so was Joseph Smith, claim to be a prophet. Were they true prophets? We must study The Bible to distinguish between a true prophet and a false prophet. A true prophet all they predict will come true 100 % of the time. We will look at just how important is the gift of prophecy?
1. Christ said H gave spiritual gifts to His church just before He ascended to heaven. Ephesians 4:8 “Wherefore he saith, When he ascended _____ ______ ______, he led captivity captive, and gave _________ unto men.”
What gift did Jesus give? Ephesians 4:11 “And he gave some, _________; and some, ___________; and some, _________; and some, ____________ and ____________;”
What was the reason for the gifts? Ephesians 4:12 “For the ______________ of the _________, for the ___________ of the _____________, for the ___________ of the body of Christ:”
What will their work do for the body of Christ? Ephesians 4:13 “Till we all come in the _________ of the _________, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
Verse 14 “That we henceforth be ______ _________ children, tossed to and fro, and _______ __________ with ________ ___________ of ___________, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;”
VERSE 15 “But speaking the _________ in _____________, may ________ _______ into _________ in all things, which is the head, even Christ:” The true prophet will unite God’s people in truth and in love. They will not accept every doctrine that comes by; but check it out by The Bible and hold to what is true. We all agree that the gifts of an evangelist, a pastor, teachers, and missionary’s are needed until The Lord comes. Why then would we not need the work of a prophet in these last days? For we are not all in unity of the faith… unto a perfect man. We are not there yet. The church is in need of all the gifts which includes the gift of prophecy.
2. What does Paul have to say unto the people near the end of time? 1 Corinthians 1:6 – 8. Verse 6 “Even as the ___________ of __________ was confirmed in you:”
Verse 7” So that ye come __________ in ______ __________; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:” Coming of The Lord Jesus Christ.
Verse 8 “Who shall also confirm you ________ _______ ________, that ye may be ______________ in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
3. What is the testimony of Jesus Christ? We will cover it in Revelation 19:10. “And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the __________ of __________: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the _________ of _____________.” If you are not yet acquainted with the spirit of prophecy you have a real blessing in store for you. Many of the questions in Daniels lessons or the other lessons up to this point come from the book’s of a modern day prophet, Ellen G. White.
4. John in Revelation speaks of the true church or woman. Revelation 12:17 “And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which ________ the ____________ of God, and have the ___________ of Jesus Christ.” Here are two marks of the true church in the last days of this earth’s history. They are two clear charactistics of God’s true chruch. They will be 1.Keeping all of God’s ten commandments and 2.The testimony of Jesus Christ.
What will the work of a true prophet do? Circle the correct answer.
A True Prophet: |
| T | or | F | Will tear down the church? |
| T | or | F | Will strengthen the church? |
| T | or | F | Will reprove and warn God’s people. |
| T | or | F | Will not take the place of The Bible (using own words and / or ideas). |
| T | or | F | Will help others to see the truth that is there in God’s word, using The Bible as the guide to live by. |
| T | or | F | Will bring unity in the church of God. |
| T | or | F | Will help to get the message of Christ to the world. |
| T | or | F | Will help us see the sin that is in our lives. |
5. We must test each prophet to see if they are true by their teachings and works. How? Isaiah 8:20 “To the ________ and to the __________: if they speak not according to this __________, it is because there is no light in them.” What they say and do must go along with The Bible teaching, or he is not a true prophet. Many of the so called prophets will go to familiar spirits or to the dead looking for answers to give insight to the future. Read Isaiah 8:19 “And when they shall say unto you, ________ unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their ___________? for the living to the dead?” We are told to seek God, and not to go to the dead or familiar spirits for answers. Many of the modern prophets, predictions are only about 25 – 50 % correct, more or less. Familiar spirits are actually evil spirits, (angels) that can guess and get a lot of things right, but a true prophet will always be 100% right.
6. What will arise in the last days? Matthew 24:24. “For there shall arise __________ __________, and ________ __________, and shall show great __________ and ____________; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall ____________ the very ___________.” If someone tried to deceive you by giving you counterfeit $100.00 bills, would you always after that reject all $100.00 dollar bills? No! The counterfeit bill just proves that there are some genuine $100.00 bills; but would you be deceived if someone gave you a $6.00 dollar bill? No! Why? It is because, there are no real $6.00 bills. If you take time to study The Bible, you will know what is in there and will not be deceived. It is because we have not acquainted ourselves with God’s word that we can be deceived. This is the reason why the testimonies were given. They are called “The Spirit of Prophecy”. “If you had made God's word your study, with a desire to reach the Bible standard and attain to Christian perfection, you would not have needed the Testimonies. It is because you have neglected to acquaint yourselves with God's inspired Book that He has sought to reach you by simple, direct testimonies, calling your attention to the words of inspiration which you had neglected to obey, and urging you to fashion your lives in accordance with its pure and elevated teachings.” 2 Testimonies 605 by Ellen White. What is the purpose of The Spirit of Prophecy?
- A. “The written testimonies are not to give new light, but to impress vividly upon the heart the truths of inspiration already revealed…. Additional truth is not brought out.” 2 Testimonies page 605
- B. “The testimonies were not given to take the place of The Bible.” 5 Testimonies page 663
- C. “The testimonies are not to belittle The Word of God, but to exalt it and attract minds to it, that the beautiful simplicity of truth may impress all.” 5 Testimonies page 665
- D. “God designs that His people shall be a unit, that they shall see eye to eye and be of the same mind and of the same judgment. This cannot be accomplished without a clear, pointed, living testimony.” 3 Testimonies page 361
- E. “There was given me also the solemn charge to deliver faithfully The Lord’s message, making no difference for friend or foe.” 5 Testimonies page 677
- F. “The straight testimony must be revived, and it will separate those from Israel who have ever been at war with the means that God has ordained to keep corruptions out of the church.” 3 Testimonies page 324
7. Here are some texts on how to tell a true prophet – 1 Thessalonians 5:19 – 21 “Quench not the Spirit. Despise not ___________. Prove ________ _________; _________ ________ that which is __________. Abstain from all appearance of evil.” Check The Prophet by The Word of God. If it does not agree with The Word of God then the prophet is not of God. Isaiah 8:17 – 20 “And I will wait upon the Lord, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him. Behold, I and the children whom the Lord hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the Lord of hosts, which dwelleth in mount Zion. 19And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead? 20To the law and to the testimony: if they _______ not ________ to THIS _______, it is because there is no light in them.” Matthew 7:18 – 20 “…A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20Wherefore ________ their _________ ye shall _________ them.” God will destroy those who bring in things that are not true. For evil fruit will be destroyed. These are some of the evil fruits. Revelation 22:15 “For without are dogs, and _________, and ___________, and ________, and ______________, and whosoever __________ and ___________ a ________.” These are without the city of God and are not a part of the ones who make up the people that God calls his own. Evil fruit will be destroyed and those who loveth and make a lie will be a part of the ones who will be destroyed. Jeremiah 28:9 “The prophet which prophesieth of peace, when the ________ of the prophet shall _________ to __________, then shall the prophet be known, that the __________ hath truly sent ___________.” Deuteronomy 18:21, 22 “And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which The Lord hath not spoken? When a _______ __________ in the _________ of the _________, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which The Lord hath not spoken, but the prophet hath __________ it _________________: thou shalt not be afraid of him.” Some prophets come in the name of the Lord, that are false prophets. We don’t need to be afraid and do what he says. God is stronger than the Devil and his host. We are not to laugh in their face; but at the same time God is stronger, and we are to stand under God’s banner and keep His law. Isaiah 8:20. “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” 1 John 4:2 “Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that ____________ that _________ __________ is come in the flesh is of God:” They must believe that Christ came to the world in flesh and blood, that He lived and died for our salvation, and that Christ is as much God as The Father and The Spirit and that He existed before creation; then you have one sign that He is a True prophet.
8. God gave his people warning from the prophets back in The Old Testament. Deuteronomy 13:1 – 5
Verse 1: “If there _______ __________ you a ___________, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder,
Verse 2: “And the _________ or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them;”
Verse 3: “Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that __________ of dreams: for The Lord your God proveth you, to know whether ye love The Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.”
Verse 4: “Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and _________ ___________, and __________ his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.”
Verse 5: “And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be ________ _______ ___________; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the Lord your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to thrust thee out of the way which the LORD thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put the evil away from the midst of thee.”
There are some who would work signs and wonders, and worship other gods. Satan will do signs and wonders in the last days. Revelation 13:12 – 14. Matthew 24:11 (Read) Why does God permit such impostors to arise, it is to try the faith of God’s followers and test them to see if they will be faithful. The time has come when the true prophet of God is getting to be well known. You may have noticed that we quote a lot from a book called “The Great Controversy” and “The Desire of Ages” as well as other books written by Ellen G. White. She was called to the work of a prophet when young in 1844 about the same time that the prophecy of Daniel 8:14 met it’s fulfillment of The 2300 Day prophecy. She lived to be 87 and in 1915 this messenger of God died. Her work bore that fruit of genuineness. She passed the acid test of The Holy Scriptures for a prophet. Her last words to a large public meeting was “I commend to you this book” (The Bible). She never pointed the people to herself – but always to God and to The Bible. Her life and writings helped build up the church and glorified Christ, which helped with the perfection of the saints. Millions that have read the books testify to how her writings had lead them closer to The Lord. If you have not written and ask for a book of Ellen White so you can taste and see her fruits, then write and ask for one. We at this point are sending to those who are doing these Revelation lessons the book “The Great Controversy” because it will help you to understand Revelation. Remember in the last lesson of Daniel we named the woman that were prophets back in Bible times, so Ellen was not the first woman prophet. She was a humble woman and she did not call herself a Prophet, but a Servant of God. Read Exodus 15:20; 2 Kings 22:14; Acts 21:8, 9.
9. We must test the prophet and hold fast to that which is good. There is a blessing for those who read and do the things written in (Revelation of Jesus Christ to John) THIS BOOK. 2 Chronicles 20:20 (Last part) “And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; _________ in the _________ your God, so shall ye be __________; ___________ his __________, so shall ye ___________.” God says we will prosper if we believe His prophets. We want to follow The Lord’s counsel given us through the gift of The Spirit of Prophecy in His church.
10. God’s message for His church today is found in Revelation 3:19 “As many as I _______, I ________ and __________: be zealous therefore, and repent.” The prophet John the Baptist gave this message in Matthew 3:2 “And saying, _________ ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Jesus preached the same message in Matthew 4:17 “From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, __________: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Note: This is written in red letters. his is the message of all of God’s prophets. It is a message of rebuke and repentance.
The writings of Ellen G. White often bring reproof to my heart. If I desire to be like Jesus, I need my sins pointed out so that I can know what I need to repent of and make changes. I want to make Jesus happy.

For a person without a formal education to be able to write many books back in the early 1800’s was amazing. For a woman to speak at large gatherings was unusual. Ellen had been sick and weak for years from an accident that happened on her way home from school. Unable to attend school and learn, God prepared her from home for the mission that He would give her to do. She helped to pioneer not only the work in Australia but also here in America in several different schools at that time. She was a messenger of The Lord. She never clamed that her writings were to replace The Bible; but that they were to help the flock of God to live better and be in better health. She taught the people how to care for their bodies so that they could be in better health. How to eat so that their minds could be clear and pure in thinking. God said to come and reason, why we do and say the things we do. We need a reason for the hope that is within us. Not an, “I think it to be this way”, but a thus sayeth The Lord. She taught the principles of “cleanliness next to godliness”. And that our houses also and grounds should be kept clean just as our bodies are to be kept clean inside and out for the best of health.
From The Testimony of S. N. Haskell
"What are some of the unmistakable fruits by which a true prophet may be recognized?" was a question the old pioneer Bible teacher S. N. Haskell would ask his students. He answered his own question as follows: "The testimony of every true prophet will agree with the testimony of the prophets of God before him, and it may be a further development of the same truth uttered by them.
The words of God are definite and pure, 'as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Thou shalt keep them, O Lord, thou shalt preserve them from this generation forever." Ps. 12:6, 7. The words of God are represented as being refined; 'As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the Lord is tried' Ps. 18:30. in Psalms 119:140, we find it spoken of as being 'very pure' (refined, "No one can add anything to the revelation we have in the Bible, but every prophet who is inspired will develop the subject, or the words spoken by prophets before him. . .
"In Psalms 138:2 are found these words, 'Thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.' In Isaiah 42:21, we have the prophecy concerning Christ: 'The Lord is well pleased for his righteousness' sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable.' An illustration of the principle of how it is magnified is found in Matt. 5:21-26, which verses magnify the sixth commandment, while verses 27-32 magnify the seventh commandment. It is this principle alone that is a positive proof of inspiration, and any prophet who does not make other scriptures seem broader and more wonderful, does not bear the right kind of fruit." --S. N. HASKELL, quoted in F. C. Gilbert, Divine Predictions Fulfilled, pp. 29-33. EGWE 244
A sheep knows its master by the sound of his voice, shepherds keep large numbers of sheep and while out on the plains grazing the sheep the other shepherds mingle and talk for hours. Enjoying the company of other shepherds. The time comes to move on as the shepherd moves out away from the others he calls his sheep. They follow the shepherd and move out from the other sheep. The sheep trust the shepherd to follow where he leads. The shepherd does not have to go among the sheep and separate them from the other herds. The call of the shepherd is all that is needed and the sheep come without delay, they know they will be cared for. We know Jesus the true shepherd and we want to follow His calling for we know he loves and cares for us. He wants the best for our lives. |
